PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, January 29: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar on Thursday said that Jamshedpur—widely known as the Steel City—is far more than an industrial hub, describing it as a national and global symbol of visionary industrial thought, ethical values and deep-rooted social responsibility.

The Governor was addressing the inaugural session of the 6th IEEE International Conference (ICRTCST-26) organised by RVS College of Engineering and Technology.

Legacy of Jamsetji Tata

Recalling the city’s origins, the Governor said Jamshedpur’s proud legacy was laid by Tata Group founder Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, who viewed industry not merely as a source of profit but as a powerful instrument for nation-building and social welfare.

He noted that the Tata Group’s sustained contributions to education, research, technology and human development continue to inspire generations across the country.

Jharkhand’s Strengths and Youth Potential

Highlighting Jharkhand’s strengths, Gangwar said the state is endowed with rich natural and mineral resources, cultural diversity and immense youth potential. In an era of rapid technological transformation, he emphasised that science, technology and innovation have become central to sustainable and inclusive development.

Role of Emerging Technologies

Referring to the themes of the two-day international conference, the Governor said information technology, artificial intelligence, smart systems, cyber-physical systems and other emerging digital technologies are not only addressing present-day challenges but are also shaping the future.

“These technologies are redefining industries, healthcare, education, smart governance and social development,” he said, adding that conferences organised by globally respected bodies like IEEE play a crucial role in knowledge exchange and in developing practical solutions to global challenges.

The Governor underlined that academic institutions must go beyond the traditional role of awarding degrees. “They must evolve into hubs of research, innovation, entrepreneurship and social problem-solving,” he said.

Urging students and young researchers to apply their technical expertise to real-world challenges, he stressed that research gains true relevance only when its benefits reach the last person in society.

India’s Vision for Technological Growth

Referring to national initiatives such as Digital India, Make in India, Startup India, Vocal for Local and Viksit Bharat @2047, the Governor said India is steadily moving towards self-reliance and technological empowerment under the leadership of the Prime Minister.

International technical conferences of this nature, he added, play a vital role in preparing India’s youth to compete and collaborate on the global stage.
