IIT (ISM) Dhanbad trains researchers in ethical, AI-driven publishing

 

Dhanbad, March 17: The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, organised a workshop on “Enhancing Research Impact through Integrity-Led, AI-Enabled, Insight-Driven Publishing” at the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre (GJLT) on Tuesday.

The programme was hosted by the Central Library of IIT (ISM) in collaboration with Elsevier, focusing on ethical publishing practices and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in research.

Focus on Ethical and AI-Assisted Publishing

The workshop aimed to create awareness among researchers about research integrity, ethical publishing, and AI-enabled scholarly communication.

The session was conducted by Palliapati Mohan Evavenhil, Senior Publishing Ethics Expert at Elsevier, who highlighted emerging trends in AI-assisted publishing and best practices to enhance research impact.

Director Emphasises Ethics and Social Responsibility

IIT (ISM) Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra, who presided over the event, stressed that research and teaching must go hand in hand and be guided by ethics, curiosity, and social responsibility.

He encouraged scholars to actively engage in discussions, stating that questioning strengthens research outcomes. He also urged researchers to use AI tools responsibly so that publicly funded research benefits society.

Adapting to Evolving Research Ecosystem

Dean (Academic) Prof. M.K. Singh was present during the session.

Prof. Ajay Mandal, Professor-in-Charge of the Central Library, highlighted the rapidly evolving research ecosystem and the need for researchers to adapt to new technologies. He emphasised the ethical use of AI tools to improve efficiency, accuracy, and productivity in research.

Caution Against Research Misconduct

Librarian Partha De stressed maintaining research integrity and warned against practices that could lead to paper retractions. He pointed out that improper citations and a lack of source verification are common issues.

He advised researchers to cite only those sources they have personally verified.

Deputy Librarian Satish Kumar was also present.

Interactive Sessions and Practical Guidance

The workshop covered key aspects such as:

  • Understanding the publishing workflow
  • Selecting suitable journals
  • Writing impactful research papers
  • Addressing research integrity challenges
  • Responsible use of generative AI tools

Interactive discussions and demonstrations of AI-enabled research platforms added practical value for faculty, research scholars, and postgraduate students.
