Ranchi, April 1: The BJP on Wednesday alleged that the law and order situation in Jharkhand has collapsed, claiming a sharp rise in crime under the Hemant Soren government.
BJP cites crime data, attacks state government
Addressing a press conference, BJP state spokesperson Pratul Shahdeo said the situation has worsened to the extent that people feel unsafe, remarking that it is as if a “dacoit is roaming every street”.

Citing data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and the Jharkhand Police website from January 2020 to January 2026, he claimed the state recorded over 10,000 rape cases, 11,000 kidnappings, 9,213 murders, and more than 60,000 thefts, with a total of 2.8 lakh cognizable crimes.
He alleged that crime has seen a noticeable rise since 2020 and accused the government of failing to address the situation effectively.

Allegations of mafia influence, poor conviction rate
Shahdeo further alleged the presence of sand, coal, and iron ore mafias, claiming such activities could not continue without government patronage.
He also referred to remarks by Congress state in-charge K. Raju, who had reportedly acknowledged the growing influence of the mining mafia and concerns over law and order.
Raising concerns over policing, Shahdeo said the conviction rate in rape cases remains low, stressing that failure to punish offenders encourages further crimes.
Call for stronger policing, public trust
The BJP leader urged the police to strengthen intelligence networks, improve investigation, and ensure swift convictions to restore public confidence.
He added that merely adding resources like vehicles would not help unless anti-crime operations are intensified.
