PNG push gains pace in Adityapur industrial area

Jamshedpur, April 10:
In a push to strengthen industrial infrastructure, efforts to expand Piped Natural Gas (PNG) supply in the Adityapur industrial belt have gathered momentum, with industry stakeholders and GAIL holding detailed discussions on connectivity and network expansion.

A delegation from the Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) met GAIL officials at Gamharia to review the current status of gas supply and future expansion plans.

Network Expanding Across Key Areas

GAIL officials informed that gas distribution networks are already in place in several parts of the Gamharia industrial area, including Phases II, IV, VI, and VII, along with sections of large sector zones and areas behind the auto cluster.

In these areas, new PNG connections are being provided within two to three months. For other locations, expansion will depend on demand from industrial units.

Demand Driving Expansion

The company clarified that network expansion is primarily demand-driven. While earlier phases saw limited uptake, increasing industrial demand has now led to faster rollout plans, subject to land availability and regulatory norms.

At present, several units have already been connected, and around 15–20 applications are pending.

Technical Challenges Highlighted

Industry representatives raised operational concerns regarding PNG usage, especially for cutting and fabrication work.

Key issues include the need for burner modifications and higher pressure requirements—up to 15 bar—compared to the current pipeline pressure of about 3 bar.

Amid global uncertainties and disruptions in energy supply chains, both sides stressed the need for a strong and reliable local gas infrastructure to ensure uninterrupted industrial operations.

SCCI President Manav Kedia said that an affordable and dependable gas supply is crucial for industrial growth and urged GAIL to speed up network expansion. He also called for practical solutions to address technical challenges faced by industries.

The meeting ended with a joint commitment to accelerate PNG rollout and align solutions with industry needs.
