Dhanbad, April 11: To foster scientific temper, improve conceptual clarity, and promote analytical thinking among underprivileged students, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad conducted a hands-on STEM training session at Bhagirath Brahmachari High School, Rajganj, Baghmara. The programme is part of an ongoing outreach initiative under an MoU signed between Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad on July 22, 2024, to support children from Project Affected Person (PAP) families and other underserved communities.
STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—follows an interdisciplinary approach that builds critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. It is considered essential for preparing students for a fast-changing, technology-driven world and for strengthening their academic foundation.

Hands-on learning engages 200 students
Led by Prof. Rashmi Singh and Prof. Niladri Das, the session engaged around 200 students from Classes IX and X through visual demonstrations, logical reasoning, and practical experiments. Activities such as balloon blow-up, candle water rising, and turmeric indicator experiments helped students link theory with real-life applications.

Prof. Niladri Das added that such initiatives help develop analytical skills and a problem-solving mindset, encouraging students to pursue higher education and careers in STEM fields.
Focus on inclusive education in coalfield regions
School Principal Anand Kumar appreciated the initiative, saying the exposure to IIT (ISM) experts has motivated students and improved their interest in science through interactive learning.
