Hindalco’s red to green initiative: ‘Torang Vatika’ inaugurated at Muri

Muri, April 18: In a significant step towards environmental sustainability and ecological restoration, Hindalco Industries Limited, Muri, inaugurated ‘Torang Vatika’—a unique bio-park developed on red mud waste land at Red Mud Pond No. 3. “Torang,” meaning “jungle” in the local Jharkhandi language, symbolises the revival of nature. The project reflects the company’s innovative “Red to Green” initiative.

Transforming Waste Land into Green Space

Launched in 2024, the initiative has transformed around 45 acres of red mud waste land into a green landscape. Earlier considered unsuitable for vegetation, the area has now been converted into a vibrant, eco-friendly bio-park through scientific planning and sustained efforts. This transformation highlights Hindalco’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Promoting Biodiversity and Sustainable Design

The park has been designed to promote biodiversity and has already started attracting birds, reptiles, and other species, helping restore ecological balance. Built mainly with natural and eco-friendly materials like bamboo, the park represents sustainable design and showcases the cultural heritage of Jharkhand.

The project was inaugurated by Sanjeev Kumar, IFS, PCCF & HoFF, Government of Jharkhand, in the presence of Dr. A.T. Mishra, PCCF-cum-Executive Director (WLDB), Government of Jharkhand. Among others present were  N.N. Roy, CMO; Sanjay Srivastava, Head Corporate Affairs; and Prashanta Bose, along with other senior officials of Hindalco.

In his remarks, Sanjeev Kumar said, “‘Torang Vatika’ is a strong example of successful restoration of industrial waste land, showing harmony between industry, environment, and society. The initiative is expected to inspire similar projects in the future.”
