PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, May 28: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and strong gusty winds across several parts of Jharkhand till June 2 due to active weather systems over eastern and central India.

According to the latest weather bulletin, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kmph are likely at isolated places across the state on May 27 and 28, except in northwestern Jharkhand.

Gusty winds likely in northwestern districts

On May 29 and 30, thunderstorm and lightning activity with gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are expected mainly over the northwestern districts of Jharkhand.

The IMD further said that from May 31 to June 2, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph are again likely at isolated places across the state.

Multiple weather systems active over region

Meteorologists attributed the changing weather conditions to multiple synoptic systems affecting eastern and central India.

A trough currently extends from northwest Uttar Pradesh to south coastal Odisha through cyclonic circulations over central Uttar Pradesh, northeast Madhya Pradesh and northwest Odisha at around 0.9 km above mean sea level.

Another north-south trough extends from north Bihar to south Telangana across Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh at 1.5 km above mean sea level, increasing moisture inflow and atmospheric instability over the state.

The weather office has advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and avoid taking shelter under trees or near electric poles during lightning incidents.
