ICAR-CIFE showcases fisheries innovations at Agri Trade Fair 2026 in Ranchi

Ranchi/Jamshedpur, June 19: The ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE), one of India’s premier fisheries education and research institutions, showcased its technological advancements and contributions to fisheries development at the Agri Trade Fair 2026, held in Ranchi from June 16 to 18.

Representing the institute, Dr. M.D. Akalkur and Udipta Roy from the ICAR-CIFE Regional Research and Training Centre (RRTC), Motipur, highlighted the institute’s key interventions and achievements in promoting fisheries development across the region since 2018.

The ICAR-CIFE exhibition stall attracted significant attention from farmers, students, entrepreneurs, and policymakers from across Jharkhand.

Chief Minister, Ministers Visit ICAR-CIFE Stall

The stall was visited by Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperation Minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey, and several senior government officials, who appreciated the institute’s efforts to strengthen the state’s fisheries sector.

Under the leadership of Director Dr. N.P. Sahu and Officer-in-Charge Dr. M.D. Akalkur, ICAR-CIFE Motipur has been actively engaged in providing technical guidance to fish farmers, conducting capacity-building programmes, and undertaking field-based research activities.

Supporting Commercial Fisheries and Rural Livelihoods

These initiatives have contributed to the growth of successful commercial fisheries enterprises, including King Fisheries, Ranchi, while creating sustainable livelihood and employment opportunities for fish farmers in the region.

The institute reiterated its commitment to promoting innovation-driven fisheries development and supporting the expansion of the aquaculture sector through research, training, and technology dissemination.

Motipur Centre Plays Key Role in Eastern India

ICAR-CIFE operates a Regional Research and Training Centre in Motipur, located in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district.

The centre features a 6-hectare freshwater fish farm and serves as an aquaculture research and demonstration hub for eastern India. Its activities focus on fish seed production, fish health management, and skill development programmes for local fish farmers.

While the main ICAR-CIFE campus is located in Mumbai, the Motipur facility is one of the institute’s five major regional outreach centres.

King Fisheries Founder Highlights Importance of Technical Support

Nishant Kumar, an award-winning entrepreneur, aquaculture consultant, and Founder-Director of King Fisheries Farms in Ratu, Ranchi, said, “The overwhelming response at Agri Trade Fair 2026 reflects the growing interest of farmers and entrepreneurs in modern aquaculture. We are grateful to ICAR-CIFE for its continuous technical support and guidance, which has played a pivotal role in transforming King Fisheries into a successful and sustainable enterprise. Such platforms are vital for connecting innovation with grassroots development and unlocking new opportunities in the fisheries sector.”

Nishant Kumar is widely recognised for his successful transition from a corporate and media career in Ranchi and Jamshedpur to becoming a pioneer in sustainable, technology-driven fish farming.
