Ranchi, August 16: The JPSC-JSSC student protest in Jharkhand has entered its 23rd day, with protesting candidates preparing for a proposed gherao of Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s residence on August 20. But despite the escalation, the students say they still want dialogue with the government and hope the Chief Minister will intervene to resolve the standoff.
Candidates camping at Ranchi’s Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium have made it clear that they do not want the agitation to turn into a confrontation. Instead, they are seeking talks with Hemant Soren before August 20 and believe their demands can be resolved through dialogue.
Students Still Hopeful of Talks With CM
A notable feature of the ongoing agitation is that the protesters have expressed faith in Chief Minister Hemant Soren even while strongly criticising the government over recruitment examinations.
Several students have described the Chief Minister as an “elder brother” and appealed to him to reopen dialogue with the protesting candidates.
Their message is essentially that they want a solution, not a confrontation. The students say that if the government takes concrete steps on their demands, they are ready to call off the agitation and return to their studies.

August 20 Gherao Is the Next Flashpoint
The proposed August 20 gherao of the Chief Minister’s residence has nevertheless raised the stakes.
The government is already under political pressure following the earlier students’ gherao of the Assembly and the controversy surrounding the police action during the protest. A large mobilisation outside the Chief Minister’s residence could create another major administrative and political challenge.
The students’ continuing call for talks, however, gives the government an opportunity to engage with them before the proposed August 20 protest.
What Are the Students Demanding?
At the centre of the agitation are demands concerning alleged irregularities and reforms in JPSC and JSSC examinations.
The students’ key demands include either cancellation of the JSSC CGL examination or a CBI inquiry into the matter. They are also demanding greater transparency and reforms in the recruitment examination system.
2,000 JSSC and 300 JPSC Vacancies Sought
The protesters have also proposed an immediate employment-related measure: fresh vacancies for around 2,000 JSSC CGL posts and recruitment for approximately 300 JPSC posts.
Students believe that issuing fresh vacancy notifications could provide a possible way out of the current deadlock. With new employment opportunities available, they say, protesting candidates could return to their studies and resume preparation for competitive examinations.
They have also pointed to long gaps between competitive examinations in Jharkhand and the large number of vacant government posts.
‘Talk to Us and We Will Return to Our Studies’
Rajesh Prasad, a core group member of the JPSC-JSSC Students and Reform Forum, has directly appealed to Hemant Soren to talk to the protesters.
Speaking at a press conference at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium, Prasad said the students did not want unnecessary confrontation. Their objective, he said, was to press for their demands and find a solution through discussions with the government.
He appealed to the Chief Minister to accept the students’ demands, saying the protesters ultimately want to return to their studies rather than continue the agitation indefinitely.
Congress Also Under Pressure
The prolonged agitation is also creating political pressure for the Congress, which is part of the ruling coalition in Jharkhand.
The source material says Congress had earlier projected itself as sympathetic to student concerns, including through the involvement of party leaders and Rahul Gandhi’s telephone conversations with students. The continuing agitation has now put the party in a difficult position within the ruling alliance.
A Congress meeting of ministers, MLAs and state office-bearers is scheduled for August 18. The meeting is expected to discuss the JPSC-JSSC controversy and the party’s position on the ongoing student agitation.
Will Dialogue Prevent the August 20 Gherao?
The students’ announcement of the August 20 gherao has brought the agitation to a crucial stage. Yet their repeated appeals for dialogue suggest that the door to a negotiated settlement remains open.
For the Hemant Soren government, the immediate challenge is to decide whether to engage with the protesters before August 20 and address their key concerns.
For the students, the message is equally clear: they want reforms, fair recruitment and employment opportunities—and, if those concerns are addressed, they say they are ready to leave the protest site and return to their studies.
