New Delhi, Dec 29: India reported 797 fresh COVID-19 cases, marking the highest daily increase in 225 days, as reported by the health ministry on Friday. The number of active infection cases now stands at 4,091.
In the last 24 hours, the Ministry’s 8 am update revealed five new COVID-19-related deaths. Among these, two occurred in Kerala, while Maharashtra, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu each reported one fatality.
On May 19, the nation reported 865 new cases. Up until December 5, the daily case count had fallen to double digits, but the advent of a new variant and the cold weather has caused the cases to rise once more.

The pandemic started in early 2020, and in the four years that followed, over 4.5 crore people got infected and over 5.3 lakh people died nationwide. At its peak, the daily figures were in lakhs.
The ministry’s website indicates that the total number of individuals who have recovered from the disease is over 4.4 crore, showcasing a national recovery rate of 98.81 per cent.
220.67 crore Covid vaccination shots have been given nationwide to date, according to the ministry’s website.
