Khunti, August 31: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Khunti, organised an awareness programme on the “NALSA – Child-Friendly Legal Services Scheme for Children, 2024” at PM SHRI Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Murhu, on Monday, with around 108 girl students participating.
The programme was organised under the directives of the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA), Ranchi, and the guidance of the Principal District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, DLSA Khunti.
The programme was attended by Kamlesh Behera, Secretary, DLSA Khunti; MD Altaf, District Child Protection Officer; Rajiv Kamal, Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel, and the principal-in-charge of the school.
Students briefed on child protection laws
During the programme, officials explained the key provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, with particular emphasis on the legal support available to children.
Students were informed that the DLSA is responsible for providing free legal aid to children in conflict with the law as well as children in need of care and protection.
The provisions of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, were also discussed. Officials explained that the law provides for free and compulsory education for children between six and 14 years of age.

Focus on education of disadvantaged children
The DLSA also highlighted NALSA’s Project Shiksha, under which impoverished and marginalised families whose children are deprived of education would be identified and connected with appropriate support.
The participants were also briefed about the Victim Compensation Scheme in cases covered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Officials further discussed initiatives of the Social Welfare Department and DLSA to provide assistive devices to persons with disabilities and facilitate their access to various government welfare schemes.
Meritorious students honoured
The programme also featured the distribution of prizes and certificates to students who performed well in reel-making, essay writing and painting competitions organised across schools and colleges in Khunti district in June 2026.
The competitions were conducted as part of the DLSA Khunti’s 90-Day Intensive Legal Awareness and Outreach Campaign 2026.
In the reel-making competition, Kumari Pallavi and Kumari Muskan, first-year B.Sc. students of Birsa College, Khunti, secured the first position.
In the essay writing competition, Kumari Karishma, a Class 11 student of PM SHRI Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Rania, secured first position.
In the painting competition, Kumari Lakshmi, a Class 9 student of PM SHRI Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Rania, won the first position.
Students securing second and third positions in all three competitions were also felicitated with prizes and certificates.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks to the school management and participating students.
