Jamshedpur, September 10: Jharkhand is likely to experience a spell of rain and thunderstorms over the next few days, with isolated heavy rainfall forecast in several districts, particularly across the central and southern parts of the state.
According to the weather outlook, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places across Jharkhand on September 10.
Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated locations in the central districts of Lohardaga, Ranchi, Khunti and Gumla, as well as in the adjoining southern districts of Simdega and West Singhbhum.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue on September 11, when thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph may occur at isolated places across the state.
Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated locations over the north-western and southern parts of Jharkhand, according to the weather outlook.
On September 12, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are again likely at isolated places. Similar thunderstorm activity may persist into September 13.
Low-pressure system driving weather activity
The anticipated wet spell is linked to favourable synoptic conditions over eastern India and adjoining regions.
The low-pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood persisted over the same region at 8.30 am on Thursday.
Its associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 9.4 km above mean sea level and tilts southwestwards with height.
A trough extending from north Haryana to the cyclonic circulation associated with the low-pressure area is passing across Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand and extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level.
The weather system is expected to support moisture incursion and enhance rainfall and thunderstorm activity over Jharkhand.
Monsoon trough remains favourable
The monsoon trough at mean sea level is also favourably positioned. It currently runs through Jammu, Dehradun, Fatehgarh, Prayagraj, Ambikapur and Jharsuguda before reaching the centre of the low-pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal and extending further east-southeastwards into the Eastcentral Bay of Bengal.
Weather officials said the combination of the low-pressure system, associated cyclonic circulation and the trough is likely to maintain unstable atmospheric conditions over Jharkhand.
While rainfall is expected to remain largely scattered, some pockets may receive heavy showers.
Residents advised to stay alert during lightning
Residents, particularly those living in vulnerable low-lying areas, have been advised to remain alert during thunderstorms.
People are advised to avoid open spaces, isolated trees and water bodies when lightning activity is observed.
Gusty winds accompanying thunderstorms may also affect localised areas and could disrupt normal activities.
