Jharkhand Weather: Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds likely across State for 7 days

PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, September 14: Jharkhand is likely to witness unsettled weather over the next seven days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph at several places across the state.

The Jharkhand weather forecast indicates continued convective activity from September 14, as multiple weather systems are influencing the region. While thunderstorm activity is expected to remain isolated, some spells could be accompanied by strong surface winds.

Low-pressure area to influence Jharkhand weather

The prevailing weather conditions are being influenced by a low-pressure area over southeast Rajasthan and adjoining north Gujarat, along with its associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilting southwards with height.

The system, together with the prevailing monsoon trough and an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal, is expected to maintain favourable conditions for thunderstorms and lightning over parts of Jharkhand.

According to the sector-wise forecast, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are likely at isolated places across different parts of the state during the forecast period beginning September 14.

Monsoon trough and upper-air systems remain active

The monsoon trough at mean sea level currently extends from Naliya through the centre of the low-pressure area over southeast Rajasthan and adjoining north Gujarat, Rajgarh, Damoh, Pendra Road and Rourkela before reaching Digha and extending southeastwards towards the northwest Bay of Bengal.

Another significant weather feature affecting Jharkhand is a trough extending from the east-central Arabian Sea to Jharkhand across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh. The trough extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.

Meanwhile, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of north Odisha and West Bengal persists between 1.5 km and 3.1 km above mean sea level.

Meteorologists expect these systems to facilitate moisture influx and atmospheric instability over parts of Jharkhand, creating favourable conditions for thunderstorm development.

IMD issues lightning safety advisory

The IMD has advised residents to exercise caution during thunderstorms and lightning, particularly while outdoors. People have also been advised to avoid taking shelter under isolated trees or staying near electrical installations during lightning activity.

With the monsoon season still active, the combined influence of the low-pressure area, monsoon trough and Bay of Bengal circulation is expected to keep weather conditions dynamic across Jharkhand through the coming week.
