Jharkhand Weather: Cloudy skies, rain likely at several places

PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, September 15: Jharkhand is likely to remain predominantly cloudy over the next few days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ranchi, forecasting light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places across the state on Tuesday.

The weather system is expected to remain active, although no significant change in maximum temperatures is likely during the next five days.

According to the forecast, rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places on September 15 and 16, while rainfall activity is expected to become more isolated on September 17 and 18. The IMD has again forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places on September 19 and 20, indicating that unsettled weather may continue through the weekend.

Multiple weather systems influencing Jharkhand

The IMD said the low-pressure area over southeast Rajasthan and adjoining Gujarat and southwest Madhya Pradesh is now centred over southeast Rajasthan and adjoining north Gujarat. Its associated cyclonic circulation extends up to about 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilts southwards.

Another important weather feature is the monsoon trough, which currently extends from Naliya through the centre of the low-pressure area, Rajgarh, Damoh, Pendra Road, Rourkela and Digha before moving southeastwards towards the northwest Bay of Bengal.

The trough extending from the east-central Arabian Sea to Jharkhand, across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh, also remains an important factor influencing rainfall over the state. It extends up to about 3.1 km above mean sea level.

In addition, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coasts persists between 1.5 km and 3.1 km above mean sea level. The system is contributing to moisture and atmospheric instability over eastern India.

No prolonged heavy rain spell expected

The latest forecast suggests that Jharkhand will experience a mix of cloudy conditions, intermittent showers and thundershowers rather than a prolonged spell of heavy rain.

With temperatures unlikely to change significantly, humid and cloudy weather is expected to persist across the state in the coming days.

Ranchi is also likely to witness patchy rain and cloudy conditions, with the maximum temperature expected to remain in the upper 20s Celsius.

Monsoon withdrawal phase approaching

The IMD’s latest national outlook indicates that the southwest monsoon is approaching its withdrawal phase, with the retreat from northwest India likely to begin around September 19.
