Jharkhand Weather: Heat and humidity keep discomfort high despite rain forecast

PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Sept 16: Heat and persistent humidity are adding to weather-related discomfort across Jharkhand, with several parts of the state experiencing muggy conditions despite relatively moderate temperatures.

Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Bokaro, Dhanbad and other urban centres have been witnessing cloudy skies and moisture-laden air, making conditions feel warmer and more uncomfortable than the actual mercury suggests.

High humidity can reduce the body’s ability to cool itself through the evaporation of sweat, often leaving people feeling hot, sticky and fatigued even when temperatures are not particularly high.

Rain likely, but relief may be temporary

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places over Jharkhand on September 17.

Similar weather conditions are expected on September 18 and 19, while the outlook for the following two days also indicates the possibility of rain and thundershowers at some places.

However, the IMD has forecast no significant change in maximum temperatures during the next five days. This means that while showers could provide temporary relief in some areas, the combination of warmth and high humidity is likely to continue.

Atmospheric systems support moisture over Jharkhand

The IMD said the monsoon trough at mean sea level currently extends through the centre of a low-pressure area over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining Kutch and southeast Pakistan, Udaipur, Raisen, Pendra Road and Ranchi before extending southeastwards towards the northwest Bay of Bengal.

An upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coasts, extending between 1.5 km and 5.8 km above mean sea level, also persists and is tilting southwestwards with height.

These atmospheric systems are supporting moisture incursion over Jharkhand, resulting in generally cloudy conditions and increasing the possibility of intermittent showers across parts of the state.

For residents of Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Bokaro, Dhanbad and other towns, the combination of warmth, humidity and limited temperature relief is likely to remain the defining feature of the weather over the coming days.
