Jamshedpur, September 29: The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has urged Chief Minister Hemant Soren to take immediate steps to strengthen law and order in Jamshedpur and adjoining areas, citing concerns over recent criminal incidents and their impact on traders, businesses and citizens.
CAIT national joint secretary Suresh Sonthalia said Jamshedpur is a major industrial and commercial centre and the economic hub of Jharkhand, making its security environment directly relevant to trade, industry, employment and economic activity across Kolhan.
“Traders stand with the government and are ready to extend full cooperation to the administration. However, providing a safe environment to traders and citizens must remain a priority of the government and police,” Sonthalia said.
CAIT has sought seven immediate measures, including intensified day-and-night police patrolling in major commercial areas such as Sakchi, Bistupur, Jugsalai, Golmuri, Mango and the Adityapur industrial area, particularly during market opening and closing hours.
CCTV, quick response mechanism among demands
The traders’ body has also demanded the appointment of a senior police officer as a nodal officer for each major commercial area to ensure prompt resolution of security-related concerns.
It has called for modern CCTV surveillance systems at markets, major intersections, entry and exit points and other vulnerable locations, with round-the-clock monitoring.
CAIT has further sought an effective Quick Response mechanism to ensure immediate police presence following any criminal incident.
Action against gangs, extortion and illegal arms
The organisation has demanded intelligence-based drives against criminal gangs, extortion, illegal arms, narcotics and other organised criminal activities.
It has also proposed police-trader coordination committees comprising CAIT and local trade associations, police and district administration officials. The committees, it said, should meet regularly to identify security concerns and emerging risks in different commercial areas.
CAIT has additionally called for a monthly senior-level review of Jamshedpur’s law-and-order situation, with reports assessing the effectiveness of security measures in vulnerable locations.
CAIT offers police-administration coordination
“Ssafe traders, safe markets and a safe Jamshedpur” should be the shared objective, Sonthalia said, adding that the security of traders would also contribute to the safety of markets and consumers.
He said a secure market environment would encourage customers to shop without fear, strengthen businesses and employment and contribute to government revenue.
Sonthalia urged the Chief Minister to conduct a high-level review of the city’s law-and-order situation and issue clear, time-bound directions to the concerned authorities.
CAIT also offered to work with the police and district administration to establish a regular “Trader-Police Security Dialogue”.
Sonthalia said the organisation’s objective was not to criticise any institution but to work with the government and administration to make Jamshedpur a safer, better-organised and secure commercial city.
