Ranchi, January 25: The government of India today announced the conferment of Padma Shri’s award to tribal environmentalists and women empowerment champions from Seraikela-Kharsawan Chami Murmu.  

52-year-old Chami Murmu is known across the country as Lady Tarzan from Jharkhand. 

She has done a lot of work in the environment and women empowerment field. Along with 3,000 women, Chami has planted more than 30 lakh trees during the last 33 years.

Murmu was awarded the Indira Gandhi Vriksha Mitra Award in 1996 for her unique work in the field of environment. 

Who is she? 

Chami Murmu was born in 1973 to mother, Nani Murmu, and father, Dhanu Murmu. She is from Baghraisai village, Rajnagar block of Seraikela -Kharsawan district. 

What has she accomplished?  

She has struggled to campaign against illegal logging, timber mafia, and poaching of animals in the forest. She also ran a campaign against Maoists, which earned her the sobriquet of Lady Tarzan.

 Chami Murmu formed a cooperative women’s organization in Baghraisai, Rajnagar in 1992. 

  She has so far given self-employment to 30 thousand women by forming a group of 3000 women through Baghraisai, a cooperative women’s organization in the Kolhan region.

She has beautified the environment and the earth by planting over 30 lakh saplings on 720 hectares.
