Ranchi, Feb 1: Academic Advisor to the Governor of Jharkhand, Prof. E. Balagurusamy said on Thursday that the economic development of the nation can be accelerated by encouraging research in the field of science and technology. This will help in making India a prosperous and developed nation.
Prof. E. Balagurusamy addressed as a special speaker in the inaugural session of a two-day interactive workshop on the promotion of research in the field of science and technology in higher education institutions of Jharkhand organized by the Department of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Jharkhand at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU).
Balagurusamy calls for collective research emphasizing rural potential
He said that in the present times, it has become necessary for educational institutions to make integrated efforts in the direction of research rather than single efforts. He stressed on exploring the possibilities of research in rural areas.
Praising the efforts made by the Higher Education and Technical Education Department to promote research work, he said that researchers and teachers should take advantage of it. He said that research is expected and necessary to solve practical problems.

Along with this, emphasis was laid on obtaining economic resources for the development of infrastructure for research. He talked about renouncing ego and working collectively to achieve the goal. He stressed practical optimism.
Principal Secretary of Jharkhand’s higher education outlines comprehensive research support
In his address, the Principal Secretary of the Higher and Technical Education Department, Government of Jharkhand, Rahul Kumar Purwar discussed in detail the research promotion programs being done and to be done by the department.
He said that the government is determined to provide adequate research grants and fellowships to promote research work in the State Universities and Colleges.
He said that Jharkhand State Faculty Development Academy will be established in the state. He said that a separate board will be established to encourage research work, innovation etc.
He informed that Fellowship to promote research has been initiated for candidates pursuing PhD from government Universities/Private Universities in the State of Jharkhand.
He added that there shall be provision of an amount of Rs 25,000 per month for UGC NET/CSIR NET qualified students and Rs 22,500 per month for Jharkhand Eligibility Test (JET) qualified students for a period of 4 years. A total of 1000 Students shall benefit annually from the scheme.
Emphasizing on interdisciplinary research to achieve the goal of Developed India 2047, he said that the research results should be helpful in removing socio-economic disparity.
Emphasizing on the joint venture between educational institutions and industries, he said that a careful approach will have to be taken while determining the curriculum.
DSPMU VC envisions Jharkhand as a hub for agricultural research
In his introductory address, Vice Chancellor of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Prof. Tapan Kumar Shandilya said that the state of Jharkhand, which has abundant natural resources and abundant and vibrant human resources, has immense possibilities for research in the field of science and technology.
He said that there are many challenges in the field of research. But these challenges can be overcome with collaborative efforts between the government, private sector and educational and research institutions.
He further said that Jharkhand’s rich biodiversity and unique socio-cultural aspects provide opportunities for interdisciplinary research. He said that the tribal communities of Jharkhand have a wealth of indigenous knowledge related to agriculture, forestry and medicinal plants. Integrating this traditional knowledge with modern scientific research can provide sustainable and culturally sensitive solutions.
He said that to promote research in science and technology, there is a need for inclusive educational initiatives that reach every corner of the state. He said that considering the predominantly agricultural economy, research in agriculture is of paramount importance for the sustainable development of Jharkhand.
He further said that joint ventures between government, private industries and research institutions can yield impactful results in areas such as infrastructure development, technology adoption and social innovation.

He said that research in Jharkhand requires continuous commitment, visionary leadership and active participation from all sectors of the society. The success of research initiatives requires continued support from government, collaboration between academia, industry and local communities and a commitment to foster innovation.
As Jharkhand moves forward on the path of sustainable development, research can become a catalyst for positive change, economic growth and improved quality of life for its residents. The synergy between local strengths and global expertise can enhance the impact of research initiatives, thereby establishing Jharkhand as a dynamic state.
Technical sessions by experts highlight research perspectives and solutions
After the inaugural session, technical sessions were organized. While Dr Vishwajanani Sattigeri, Chairperson, CSIR-TKDL delivered a lecture on the Adoption of Traditional Systems in Higher Education, Dr. Umesh Kumar Sharma, Scientist F, DST, GoI spoke on Schemes of GoI for Promotion of Research and Development in Higher and Technical Education.
Dr Pravakar Mohanty, Scientist E, DST, GoI talked about Opportunities for R & D Grants: DST perspective. Dr. Aditya Kumar, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT-ISM Dhanbad presented his views on Role of Educational Institutions in Solving societal and local problems of Jharkhand. Dr. Ajay Kumar Mahalka, Associate Professor, Amity University, Jharkhand delivered a lecture on ‘How to secure grants for Research Projects’.
The inaugural session was conducted by Dr. Suchi Santosh Barwar and the technical sessions were conducted by Dr. Shalini Lal.
Vice Chancellors and teacher representatives of various universities were present on this occasion.
