Rajya Sabha Chairman doesn’t allow jailed AAP leader Sanjay Singh to take oath

New Delhi, Feb 5: Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar declined to allow AAP leader Sanjay Singh, currently in jail, to be sworn in as a Rajya Sabha MP on Monday.

Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, stated that the issue is presently under consideration by the Privileges Committee.

Singh is under arrest and has been charged in connection with the money laundering case associated with the Delhi Excise Policy.

Court had allowed to take oath

Singh was earlier permitted to take an oath as an MP for the Rajya Sabha while being held in custody by the Rouse Avenue court on Saturday.

Additionally, Sanjay Singh’s judicial custody was prolonged by the court until February 17. He appeared in person before the court.

Sanjay Singh was granted permission to take an oath while in judicial custody by Special Judge M. K. Nagpal.

On February 1, Sanjay Singh appealed to Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court for temporary bail lasting seven days to be able to take the oath as a Rajya Sabha MP and participate in the ongoing Parliament session from February 5 to February 9. Subsequently, he revised his request, seeking approval solely to attend Parliament for the oath-taking ceremony.

Bail pending in HC

Singh was previously given authorization to submit his nomination for election and pick up his membership certificate from the returning officer.

Nevertheless, his ordinary bail was rejected on December 22, 2023, and his bail petition is currently awaiting a decision from the High Court.
