New York, Sept 8: Carlos Alcaraz reclaimed his place at the top of world tennis with a commanding triumph at the US Open, dethroning Italy’s Jannik Sinner both from the Flushing Meadows crown and the world number one ranking.

The 22-year-old Spaniard overpowered his rival 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a 2-hour-42-minute final at Arthur Ashe Stadium to secure his second title in New York and his sixth career Grand Slam.

With this victory, Alcaraz ended Sinner’s 65-week stay at the top of the rankings and drew level with him in 2025’s major haul — two apiece, after Sinner’s Australian Open and Wimbledon wins earlier in the year.

The result also marked payback for Alcaraz, whose serving struggles cost him against the Italian at the All England Club, but proved decisive this time.

Though their showdown lacked the intensity of their French Open and Wimbledon finals, Alcaraz’s clinical display ensured he became the second-youngest man, after Bjorn Borg, to capture six major titles.

His resurgence in New York underscored his growing dominance and reignited his fierce rivalry with Sinner.
