All five accused arrested in Durgapur medical college gang rape case

Kolkata, Oct 13: All five accused in the alleged gang rape of a private medical college student in Durgapur are now in police custody, following the arrest of two additional accused on Monday, West Bengal Police confirmed. The three other accused had been apprehended on Sunday.

The 23-year-old survivor, a second-year MBBS student from Jaleswar in Odisha, was allegedly raped on Friday night near her college campus after stepping out for dinner with a friend. She is currently receiving treatment at the hospital and has given her statement to the authorities.

The case sparked nationwide attention after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s controversial remarks appeared to question the student’s actions, asking why she had left the campus at night in a “forest area” and suggesting the college should ensure students’ safety.

Her comments drew widespread criticism for appearing to blame the victim, prompting opposition leaders and activists to condemn her statement as insensitive. Banerjee later claimed her words had been “distorted.”

The police continue to investigate the incident as public outrage grows over the handling of the case.
