Poonch, May 30: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday visited Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, in the aftermath of recent Pakistani shelling that targeted civilian areas. During his visit, Shah met the families of those killed in the attack, offering condolences and distributing appointment letters to their next of kin as a form of government support.

Reviewing the ground situation, Shah also visited religious sites damaged in the shelling and assessed security arrangements ahead of the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. He later interacted with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at the Khanetar Unit Headquarters and praised their involvement in ‘Operation Sindoor’ — the Indian military’s retaliatory strike carried out on May 7.

Shah stated that the May 7 operation was a decisive and precise strike by Indian Armed Forces targeting terrorist launchpads deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). “Hundreds of terrorists were eliminated. This was a powerful response, sent on behalf of every Indian,” he said.

He further asserted that Pakistan’s retaliatory shelling in civilian areas, especially in Poonch, only reinforced global recognition of Pakistan’s role in harbouring terrorists. “They called it an attack on their country, exposing to the world who shelters terrorism,” Shah added.

Strongly condemning the attack on civilians, Shah noted, “This was the first time since independence that Poonch came under such fire. The Indian Armed Forces gave a befitting reply by striking nine air bases in Pakistan, forcing them to seek a ceasefire.”

Referring to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, including a Nepali citizen, Shah said the Indian response through Operation Sindoor was swift and resolute. He warned that any future assault on innocent civilians or Indian forces would be met with an even more accurate and forceful reply.

“This government has made it clear—India will not tolerate any threat to its people or forces,” Shah declared.
