PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, April 8: A comprehensive anti-drug awareness campaign was organised at Sona Devi University on Wednesday, focusing on educating students about the dangers of substance abuse and the importance of rehabilitation.

The programme, held at the university’s Vivekananda Auditorium, was jointly organised by the East Singhbhum district administration, Sona Devi University, Civil Defence, and Meraki Organisation.

Youth Most Vulnerable: Police

Addressing the gathering, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rishabh Garg said that youth are the most vulnerable to drug abuse and urged students to act as ambassadors of awareness in their communities.

He encouraged reporting drug-related activities via the 112 helpline and warned about the growing threat of synthetic drugs, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to a drug-free region.

Focus on Rehabilitation, Not Stigma

University Chancellor Prabhakar Singh stressed the need for a compassionate approach toward those struggling with addiction. He highlighted treatment facilities like the Central Institute of Psychiatry and called for societal support instead of stigma.

He also referred to UGC and WHO guidelines for maintaining drug-free campuses.

Community Efforts and Student Role

Meraki Organisation secretary Rita Patra said awareness drives have been ongoing across East Singhbhum for the past year, with plans to expand to Ghatshila with student participation.

Civil Defence Vice-President Dayashankar Mishra urged students to join volunteer initiatives and highlighted awareness on laws such as the Motor Vehicles Act and POCSO Act, along with the importance of helping accident victims.

Local police officials, including Ghatshila OC Rajendra Munda and Maubhandar OC Neeraj Gupta, also addressed students. They stressed community participation and cooperation with police to tackle rising drug trafficking activities.

The event began with a lamp-lighting ceremony and a Ganesh Vandana performance by student Mausami Mahato. It was conducted by Assistant Registrar Archana Singh, with Registrar Dr. Nit Nayana delivering the vote of thanks.

The initiative aimed to promote awareness, responsibility, and collective action against drug abuse.
