Bangladesh court denies bail to former ISKCON priest Chinmoy Das

Chattogram, Jan 2: A Bangladesh court on Thursday denied bail to Chinmoy Krishna Das, a former ISKCON priest, who was arrested in a sedition case on November 25 last year.

Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Saiful Islam rejected the bail plea after approximately 30 minutes of hearing arguments from both sides.

A team of 11 Supreme Court lawyers took part in Chinmoy Krishna’s bail hearing today.

Previous court proceedings were postponed after lawyers for Chinmoy Krishna Das faced threats. On December 3, 2024, a Chittagong court set January 2 as the date for the bail hearing, following a time petition from the prosecution and the absence of legal representation for the Hindu monk.

Chinmoy Krishna Das faced sedition charges for allegedly hoisting a saffron flag above the national flag in Chittagong on October 25. His arrest on November 25 triggered widespread protests, leading to violent confrontations between his supporters and law enforcement near the Chattogram Court Building on November 27, which left a lawyer dead.
