New Delhi, May 9: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been suspended for a week with immediate effect, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday through its media advisory amid growing tensions between India and Pakistan. The decision follows intense discussions between the BCCI and the central government.

The IPL Governing Council made the decision after holding consultations with key stakeholders, including franchise representatives, broadcasters, sponsors, and fan groups.

Most franchisees expressed concerns on behalf of their players, prompting the Council to consider the broader sentiment around the league’s continuation during the prevailing security situation.

While the BCCI reaffirmed its confidence in the capability of India’s armed forces to handle the crisis, it emphasised that the suspension was a precautionary measure made in the collective interest of all involved.

A revised schedule and new venues will be announced after a detailed review of the situation in coordination with relevant authorities and stakeholders.

The suspension comes amid mounting uncertainty surrounding the tournament, particularly after Thursday’s match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was abruptly halted due to air raid alerts in nearby areas, including Jammu and Pathankot.

Originally scheduled to conclude on May 25 in Kolkata, the IPL is now on hold, with no clear timeline for its resumption.

“At this critical juncture, the BCCI stands firmly with the nation. We express our solidarity with the Government of India, the Armed Forces, and the people of our country. The Board salutes the bravery, courage, and selfless service of our armed forces, whose heroic efforts under Operation Sindoor continue to protect and inspire the nation, as they lead a resolute response to the recent terrorist attack and the unwarranted aggression by Pakistan’s armed forces. While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing greater than the Nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security of our country. The BCCI remains firmly committed to support all efforts that safeguard India and will always align its decisions in the best interest of the nation,” a BCCI statement said.

In a parallel development, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) was moved to the UAE earlier in the day due to similar security concerns.
