Dhanbad, Dec 28: BIT Sindri electrical engineering third-year student Avinash Priyadarshi was crushed to death in a road accident on the Sindri–Jharia main road near Kandra under Goshala police station area, around 28 km away from here on Wednesday evening.

A police official said that the incident occurred at around 7.30 pm.

Avinash Priyadarshi  (23) was going on his bike to the Lodna residence of his maternal uncle from the hostel. His bike slipped under a loaded Hywa truck coming from the opposite side and was crushed to death on the spot.

Avinash Priyadarshi’s father, Prem Kumar Nirala, a resident of Bhaga in Dhanbad, is a loco pilot for the Mumbai rail.  Avinash was residing in the hostel of BIT Sindri. His elder brother is also an engineer.

Students protest by blocking road

Getting information BIT Sindri students and relatives of Avinash Priyadarshi reached the accident spot and blocked the Sindri–Jharia traffic keeping the body on the road.  Students were demanding the immediate arrest of the Hywa truck driver.

Senior faculty members of BIT Sindri also reached and after negotiation with police officials, the road blockade was lifted at 11.40 pm.  Goshala police station officer-in-charge Virendra Kumar told media persons that  Rs 75,000  was paid on the spot for the last rites of the victim student. The body was sent for post-mortem at a medical college hospital.

“Compensation would be decided after the arrival of the victim student’s family members,” said a police officer.

BIT Career Development  Centre (CDC) chairman Prof Ghanshyam, senior faculty members and BIT Alumni Association members expressed deep shock over the tragedy.
