Ranchi, Dec. 28: The Supreme Court collegium has recommended Dr Justice B R Sarangi, the senior-most judge of the Orissa High Court, to be appointed as the next chief justice of the Jharkhand High Court. Currently, he is the acting chief justice of the Orissa High Court.
The post has fallen vacant after Chief Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra retired today.
The resolution, issued by the Supreme Court, said that a vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice of the High Court of Jharkhand is going to arise very shortly following the retirement of Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra. Therefore, an appointment to that office is required, it added.
Elevated as Orissa HC judge on June 20 2013
Justice Sarangi was elevated as a Judge of the High Court of Orissa on 20 June 2013 after completing 27 years of regular practice at the Bar before the High Court of Orissa and the Supreme Court. He conducted cases almost in
all branches of law. As regards his contribution to the judiciary by way of disposal of cases, during his tenure of more than 10 years as a
Judge of High Court, he has authored more than 1056 reported judgments. He has acquired considerable experience in dispensing justice in the High Court.
“While considering his name, the Collegium has taken into consideration the fact that after the retirement of Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra, there would be no representation of the High Court of Orissa among the Chief Justices of the High Courts. Having regard to all relevant factors, the Collegium is of the considered view that Dr Justice B R Sarangi is fit and suitable in all respects for being appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jharkhand,” the resolution said.
