Cancer treatment demands compassion as much as medicine: Jharkhand Governor

Ranchi, July 12: Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar inaugurated the at Hotel Radisson Blu, Ranchi today. In his address, the Governor emphasised that cancer is not merely a disease of the body but one that deeply affects the mental, emotional, and social well-being of the entire family.

“In such times, human compassion, trust and a sense of belonging are just as vital to healing as medicine itself,” he said.

Addressing Gaps in Healthcare Access

Acknowledging the health challenges in Jharkhand, particularly in its remote and rural areas, the Governor highlighted the urgent need for dedicated and timely efforts in the early diagnosis and proper treatment of cancer.

He underlined that while advancements have been made, significant disparities still exist in access to quality healthcare across the state.

‘Ayushman Bharat’ as a Catalyst for Change

Speaking on healthcare initiatives, the Governor praised the Ayushman Bharat scheme as a transformative programme launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. He noted that the scheme has enabled millions from economically weaker sections to access free and quality medical care.

“The real success of this initiative lies in the collective commitment of doctors, hospitals, state governments, and society as a whole,” he said.

Doctors as Healers and Guides

Calling doctors “Vaidya Narayano Hari” – an embodiment of divinity in healing – the Governor stressed that medical treatment should be rooted in service, empathy, and commitment. He shared a personal note, mentioning that he often refers patients to a cancer specialist in Bareilly, where many have reported successful outcomes.

A Call to Stand with Cancer Patients

The Governor expressed hope that the summit would offer new direction in both cancer care and public awareness across Jharkhand. Concluding his address, he appealed to the attendees:

“No cancer patient should feel alone. Their pain is our collective responsibility. We must work together to help them return to the path of life.”
