New Delhi, June 25: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approved a major overhaul of its examination policy, deciding to hold Class 10 board exams twice a year starting from the 2026 academic session.

This reform aligns with the recommendations of the National Education Policy (NEP), which advocates for a less high-stakes examination environment.

Under the new structure, the first board exam will be held in February and will be compulsory for all students. An optional second attempt will be offered in May for those who wish to improve their performance.

According to CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, students will have the opportunity to enhance their scores in up to three subjects from science, mathematics, social science, and languages.

Results for the February session will be declared in April, while those for the May session will be released in June. Schools located in winter-bound regions will be given flexibility to choose either exam window, providing them with greater convenience in planning.

The internal assessment component will continue to be conducted only once per academic year. CBSE had released the draft guidelines for this reform back in February and sought input from various stakeholders before finalising the norms.
