Ranchi, May 7: Seven-year-old swimmer Ishank Singh from Ranchi met Chief Minister Hemant Soren at the Chief Minister’s Residential Office on Kanke Road on Thursday, following his historic achievement in crossing the Palk Strait between India and Sri Lanka.
The Chief Minister honoured the young swimmer by presenting him with a cheque of ₹5 lakh, a traditional stole (Angavastra) and a memento.
Ishank Singh Sets Record in Palk Strait Swim
Ishank Singh created a world record on April 30, 2026, by continuously swimming for 9 hours and 50 minutes to cross the 29-km-long Palk Strait, one of the most challenging sea routes between India and Sri Lanka.

Congratulating the young swimmer, Chief Minister Hemant Soren described the achievement as a matter of pride for Jharkhand.

CM Highlights State’s Sports Policy
The Chief Minister said Jharkhand’s sports policy is helping athletes receive better training, modern facilities and necessary resources to compete at higher levels.

He expressed confidence that Ishank Singh would continue to perform well in future national and international competitions and bring further recognition to the state.
Govt Assures Support for Young Talent

Hemant Soren said Ishank Singh’s dedication, discipline and determination would inspire young athletes across Jharkhand. He also directed officials to prepare an action plan to strengthen sports infrastructure, including swimming training facilities in the state.
The Chief Minister also felicitated Ishank Singh’s parents and coach during the programme.
State Tourism, Art & Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Sudivya Kumar, Chief Secretary Avinash Kumar, Sports Department Secretary Mukesh Kumar, Director of Sports Asif Ikram, Deputy Director Rajesh Kumar, Swimming Association representative Shailendra Tiwari and other officials were present on the occasion.
