Jamshedpur, April 16: In a vibrant celebration, CSIR–National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), Jamshedpur, observed Janjatiya Gaurav Divas, commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of legendary tribal icon Bhagwan Birsa Munda today.
The event, part of a nationwide initiative declared by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aimed to honor the enduring legacy of India’s tribal communities and spotlight their vital role in shaping the nation.
Tribal Students and Leaders Unite in Celebration
The event brought together distinguished guests, including Dr. Sandeep Ghosh Chaudhuri, Director of CSIR–NML; Dr. Naresh Chandra Murmu, Director of CSIR–CMERI, Durgapur; Dr. Manoj M. Humne, Chief Scientist and SC/ST Representative; and Aditya Mainak, Administrative Controller.

More than 300 students from 10 tribal schools across East and West Singhbhum, along with their teachers, joined the celebration.

Jharkhand Education Minister Announces New Schools
Jharkhand Education Minister Ramdas Soren, the chief guest, delivered a keynote address, celebrating the region’s deep-rooted tribal heritage and resistance movements.
He paid homage to heroes like Tilka Manjhi, Sidho-Kanhu, and Phulo-Jhano, and emphasized the importance of education, especially for tribal youth. Highlighting government initiatives such as the Medha Samman Yojana, he also announced the launch of three new CBSE-affiliated residential schools modeled on Netarhat Vidyalaya to better prepare students for national-level exams.
Science as a Tool for Empowerment
Dr. Chaudhuri welcomed the audience, reflecting on Birsa Munda’s influence on India’s freedom movement and his enduring cultural impact. Dr. Murmu encouraged students to see science as a powerful pathway to empowerment, innovation, and social transformation.
