Kolkata, April 30: A devastating fire broke out late Tuesday night at a hotel located in the Mechuapatti area of central Kolkata, resulting in the deaths of 14 people and injuries to several others. The incident caused panic in the area, and the hotel owner reportedly fled the scene following the blaze.

The fire brigade received an alert around 8:15 PM, after which several fire engines were dispatched to the site. Firefighters battled the intense flames for hours before finally bringing the blaze under control.

The fire was so severe that some guests were forced to jump from the building to escape. Fire and police personnel continue to remain at the site, engaged in ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured. The Prime Minister’s Office conveyed the condolences and assured support for those affected.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma confirmed that 14 bodies have been recovered and dozens of people have been rescued safely. A special team has been formed to investigate the cause of the fire, and efforts are being made to trace the absconding hotel owner.

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim and Minister Shashi Panja reached the site shortly after the incident. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was also briefed and directed officials to take all necessary measures. She confirmed the death toll and said that an inquiry had been ordered to ascertain the cause of the tragedy.
