New Delhi, Feb 3: The Delhi High Court has issued summons to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in response to a defamation suit filed by BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who has sought Rs. 10 crore in damages along with a public apology.

Chandrasekhar alleges that Tharoor made false and defamatory remarks during the 2024 General Elections, accusing him of bribing voters in the Thiruvananthapuram constituency.

Taking cognizance of the matter, a bench led by Justice Purushainder Kumar Kaurav directed Tharoor to respond to the charges. The High Court issued a notice through all permissible means, requiring Tharoor’s reply by April 28, 2025.

Chandrasekhar has also sought a restraining order to prevent Tharoor from making further defamatory statements.

According to Chandrasekhar, Tharoor falsely accused him in April 2024 of offering bribes to key figures, including Parish priests, to sway voters in his favour.

The BJP leader contends that Tharoor’s statements, made on national television, were aimed at tarnishing his reputation and influencing the election outcome.

He further claims that these allegations, widely circulated through news channels and social media, played a significant role in his electoral defeat.
