DSPMU celebrates National Sports Day with mini marathon, chess and volleyball

Ranchi, August 29: Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University (DSPMU), Ranchi, celebrated National Sports Day with a series of sporting competitions, drawing enthusiastic participation from students who showcased their talent, discipline and sporting spirit.

A total of 236 students registered for the event. Around 100 students participated in the Mini Marathon, 50 in Chess, while the remaining participants competed in Volleyball.

The programme began in the morning with a 5-km Mini Marathon, which started from the Old Building Main Block of the university. Participants completed two rounds of the Morabadi area.

In the men’s category, Sujeet Munda secured first place, completing the race in 19 minutes and 41 seconds. Rahul Sahu finished second, while Shatrunj Kumar stood third.

In the women’s category, Vimla Ora won the race with a timing of 24 minutes and 35 seconds. Isha Kirketa secured second place and Rakhi Kumari finished third.

Notably, all three top-ranking participants in the women’s category were NCC cadets.

Rohit Tiger wins Chess competition

The Chess competition saw 52 students register, with 34 eventually participating. A total of 32 matches were played over eight rounds.

Rohit Tiger of BCA secured first position, followed by Navneet Priya of Zoology in second place and Abhishek Kumar Yadav of BCA in third.

Volleyball teams showcase competitive spirit

Eight teams participated in the Volleyball competition, with each team comprising six players and two reserve players.

In the men’s category, Team Blue emerged champion, while Team Yellow finished runner-up. In the women’s category, the Red Team won the competition.

Sujeet, captain of Team Blue, and Pawan, captain of Team Yellow, led their respective teams during the competition.

Tribute paid to Major Dhyan Chand

The programme also marked the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. University officials and participants paid floral tribute to the sporting icon on the occasion.

The event was attended by University Registrar Dr Dhananjay Vasudeo Dwivedi, Dean of Student Welfare Dr Sarvottam Kumar, Dr Ganesh Chandra Baskey, Head of the Department of Education Dr Reena Nand, B.Ed. Sports Head Manish Kumar Shaw, and Sports Coordinator Priya.

University plans larger sports event next year

Dean of Student Welfare Dr Sarvottam Kumar congratulated the participants on National Sports Day and Major Dhyan Chand’s birth anniversary. He said efforts would be made to organise the competitions on a larger scale next year, potentially extending the programme to two or three days instead of limiting it to a single day.

Registrar Dr Dhananjay Vasudeo Dwivedi said the university would continue to encourage sporting talent among students and provide necessary support to athletes. He urged students to embrace the values of sportsmanship, discipline and fitness.

The Registrar and Dean of Student Welfare subsequently distributed prizes among the winners and runners-up.

The programme concluded with the prize distribution ceremony and a group photograph. Students participated enthusiastically throughout the event, making the National Sports Day celebrations a vibrant showcase of sporting talent and teamwork.
