New Delhi, Sept 6: The Election Commission has announced that a comprehensive review of voter lists, known as Special Intensive Revision (SIR), will be implemented across the country.

In this regard, the Commission will hold a meeting with Chief Election Officers from all states in Delhi on September 10.

According to sources, the Election Commission has not yet finalized the official date for nationwide implementation. A final decision on the rollout will be taken during the September 10 meeting.

It may be recalled that when the Election Commission ordered the SIR process in Bihar on June 24, it had indicated that the exercise could eventually be extended across the country.

In its order for Bihar, the Election Commission cited its authority under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 (RPA 1950), and other relevant provisions, which allow it to direct a special intensive revision of electoral rolls. This process includes the preparation of updated voter lists.

The Commission has now decided to implement SIR throughout India. In Bihar, the SIR process is currently underway and is expected to be completed by September 30.
