Jamshedpur, October 14: The festive fervour of Sharadiya Durga Puja at Utkal Association in Sakchi appears to have diminished this year, with factionalism among its office-bearers threatening to overshadow the spirit of the annual celebration.
Although the Puja is being held at the association’s premises, the event seems to lack the vibrancy and grandeur that have traditionally drawn members of the Odia community in large numbers.
Utkal Association has long served as a cultural and social hub for the Odia community in Jamshedpur, bringing together men, women and children during religious and cultural occasions. Durga Puja, in particular, has been a major attraction, with devotees gathering over the four-day celebration to offer prayers, enjoy khichdi bhog and participate in cultural programmes.
Factionalism Casts a Shadow Over Festivities
The association’s traditional celebrations have been affected by divisions among its functionaries, with differences reportedly emerging around two months ago. The growing discord has now become increasingly visible during one of the community’s most important annual festivals.
Despite efforts by a section of the office-bearers to reconcile the disgruntled members and restore harmony, the attempts have reportedly failed to produce the desired results.
The divisions have left several members and office-bearers distressed, with some feeling less comfortable visiting the association than they did in the past.
Traditional Idols and Cultural Attractions
The association’s Durga Puja has traditionally been known for its distinctive clay idols of Maa Durga and her siblings, which draw the attention of pandal-hoppers.
The celebrations have also gained popularity over the years with the addition of Dandiya, bringing further colour and energy to the festivities. The combination of religious rituals, cultural programmes and community bonding has long made the Puja a special occasion for the Odia community in the city.
This year, however, the prevailing differences appear to have weakened the sense of togetherness that has traditionally defined the celebration.
Appeal for Unity and Reconciliation
The discord does not necessarily reflect a lack of religious devotion among the association’s functionaries. Rather, personal differences and wounded pride appear to have taken precedence over the collective spirit of the festival, according to observations within the association.
One of the key functionaries, speaking to this correspondent, expressed hope that the situation would improve.
“Let Goddess Durga bless all the members as well as office-bearers of the association so that good sense prevails among them all,” the functionary said.
As the festivities continue, the larger hope among members is that reconciliation will restore the association’s unity and help revive the warmth and grandeur traditionally associated with its Durga Puja celebrations.
