Notably, general elections are proposed to be held in Bangladesh in February. Monday was the last date for filing nominations, and on the same day Khaleda Zia had submitted her nomination papers for the upcoming parliamentary elections. She had filed nominations from three different constituencies.

BNP’s acting chairman and Khaleda Zia’s son, Tarique Rahman, had also filed nomination papers from two seats.

According to the party, a total of five nominations were filed on behalf of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman for the 13th National Parliamentary Elections.

On Monday, the final day of the nomination process, Khaleda Zia’s representatives submitted the nomination papers at the offices of the respective returning officers.

Her sudden demise has now sparked speculation about new political equations emerging in the electoral arena.
