Kolkata, August 14: Former Indian hockey player and 1972 Olympic bronze medallist Dr. Vece Paes passed away on Thursday morning. The 80-year-old had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease and was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday, where he breathed his last.
Dr. Vece Paes was not only an exceptional hockey player but also devoted his life to Indian sports. He was the father of Indian tennis legend Leander Paes. His demise has cast a pall of grief over the Indian sporting fraternity.

Primarily known as a hockey midfielder, Paes also actively participated in football, cricket, and rugby. He served as the president of the Indian Rugby Football Union from 1996 to 2002.

Alongside his career as an athlete, Dr. Paes also earned distinction as a sports medicine doctor. He worked as a medical consultant with the Asian Cricket Council, the BCCI, and the Indian Davis Cup team. His expertise and guidance helped many athletes start their careers and maintain peak fitness.
Dr. Vece Paes’s life remains an inspiring example in Indian sports culture. He not only won medals for the country but also left an indelible mark on Indian sports.
