New Delhi, March 14: A panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appointed retired IAS officers Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar as the new election commissioners, as announced by committee member and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Thursday.
The six former bureaucrats who made the shortlist were Utpal Kumar Singh, Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, Gyanesh Kumar, Indevar Pandey, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, and Sudhir Kumar Gangadhar Rahate.
Anup Chandra Pandey’s retirement on February 14 and Arun Goel’s abrupt resignation had resulted in the vacant positions.

Speaking to reporters at his residence shortly after the meeting concluded, Chowdhury stated that the names of Sandhu and Kumar were chosen by the majority of the panel out of six candidates that were presented to them for the two ECs.
Nevertheless, he stated that the Chief Justice of India must have been on the selection panel and that it was unclear how the Law Minister’s search committee, which is believed to have received over 200 candidates, came up with the shortlist of six names.
