Ranchi, September 3: Justice Harish Chandra Mishra, former Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court and the incumbent Lokayukta of Delhi, died at around 66 in New Delhi on Thursday morning after suffering a massive cardiac arrest in his sleep, according to family sources.
Family members said Justice Mishra did not wake up in the morning. Concerned, they rushed him to Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
His sudden demise has cast a pall of gloom over the judicial fraternity in Jharkhand, with which he had a long and distinguished association spanning more than two decades.
Justice Mishra joined the Jharkhand Superior Judicial Service in 2000, soon after the formation of the state. During his judicial career, he served as Additional District and Sessions Judge in Deoghar and as a Special CBI Judge in Ranchi, where he presided over several fodder scam cases. He later served as District and Sessions Judge in Deoghar and Chaibasa.
He also held important administrative positions in the Jharkhand High Court, including Executive Chairman of the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA) and Registrar General.
Justice Mishra was elevated as a Judge of the Jharkhand High Court in April 2011 and served as Acting Chief Justice from August to November 2019.
Justice Mishra was appointed Lokayukta of Delhi in 2022 and was serving in the post at the time of his death. He was due to complete his tenure in July next year.
Known for his simple and disciplined lifestyle, Justice Mishra was a teetotaller and was regarded by those familiar with him as a person who maintained a low-profile personal life despite holding several high constitutional and judicial offices.
He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
Cremation in New Delhi on Friday
Justice Mishra’s mortal remains will be cremated on Friday at Dayanand Mukti Dham, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
His death brings to an end a distinguished judicial career marked by important assignments in both Jharkhand and Delhi.
