New Delhi, Jan 9: French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed 34-year-old Education Minister Gabriel Attal as the new Prime Minister on Tuesday.

Gabriel Attal is the youngest and first gay Prime Minister of France.

Elisabeth Borne, the outgoing prime minister, will be replaced by Attal, a close Macron ally who rose to fame as the government spokesman during the Covid outbreak, as reported by RTL radio and BFM TV.

Recent opinion polls have ranked Attal as one of the nation’s most popular politicians. He has established a reputation as an astute minister who feels comfortable both in parliament and on radio programs.

The move indicates Macron’s willingness to try to move past the unpopular pension and immigration reforms from the previous year and increase his centrist party’s chances in the June EU ballot, albeit it won’t necessarily result in any significant political shift.

According to polls, Macron’s team is behind Marine Le Pen’s far-right party by eight to 10 percentage points.
