New Delhi, August 14: As India prepares to mark its 79th Independence Day on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the celebrations by hoisting the national flag at the Red Fort in Delhi.

Ahead of the occasion, the government has announced honours for 1,090 personnel from the police, fire services, Home Guard & Civil Defence (HG&CD), and correctional services in recognition of their courage, dedication, and exemplary service.

The list includes 233 Gallantry Medals (GM), 99 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 Medals for Meritorious Service (MSM).

The Gallantry Medal, presented for rare and daring acts such as saving lives, safeguarding property, preventing crime, or arresting criminals despite grave risks, accounts for the largest share of bravery honours.

Of these 233 awards, 152 go to personnel from Jammu and Kashmir, 54 to those serving in Left Wing Extremism-hit areas, three to the North-East, and 24 to other regions. The recipients comprise 226 from police forces, six from fire services, and one from Home Guard & Civil Defence.

The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service is reserved for personnel with an outstanding and special record, while the Medal for Meritorious Service acknowledges resourcefulness, commitment, and noteworthy contributions to duty.

This recognition underscores the diverse roles and unwavering commitment of India’s security and emergency service personnel in ensuring public safety and national security.
