Controversy over Hindu names of hijackers

The controversy arises from the depiction of hijackers in the series about the Indian Airlines plane that was hijacked on its flight from Kathmandu to Delhi, which has drawn objections from several viewers.

The ‘IC 814’ series, featuring prominent actors such as Vijay Varma, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapoor, and Arvind Swami, is based on the notorious hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814 in 1999. The makers claim that the series is based on factual accounts of this unforgettable event in Indian aviation history. However, controversy has arisen due to the use of Hindu names for two of the hijackers in the series.

Hijackers adopted different names to conceal their Muslim identity

BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya stated that the hijackers of IC-814 were notorious terrorists who had adopted different names to conceal their Muslim identities.

“The hijackers of IC-814 were dreaded terrorists, who acquired aliases to hide their Muslim identities. Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, legitimised their criminal intent, by furthering their non-Muslim names. Result? Decades later, people will think Hindus hijacked IC-814”, Malviya posted on X.

“Left’s agenda to whitewash the crimes of Pakistani terrorists, all Muslims, served. This is the power of cinema, which the Communists have been using aggressively, since the 70s. Perhaps even earlier. This will not just weaken / put in question India’s security apparatus in the long run, but also shift the blame away from the religious cohort, that is responsible for all the bloodshed”, he added.
