Dhanbad, August 29: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad celebrated National Sports Day on Saturday with enthusiasm and sporting spirit, commemorating the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand and highlighting the importance of fitness, discipline, perseverance and sportsmanship.
As part of the celebrations, the institute organised a marathon race in four categories: Student Boys (5 km), Student Girls (2.5 km), Male Employees and Dependents (2.5 km), and Female Employees and Dependents (2.5 km).
The event drew enthusiastic participation from students, employees and their dependents, reflecting the institute’s strong sporting culture and growing emphasis on fitness and healthy living.
The programme was attended by IIT (ISM) Dhanbad Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Deepti Ladies Club President Sakuntala Mishra, Dean (Students’ Welfare) Prof. Sanjay Mondal, Registrar Prabodh Pandey, and Associate Dean (Student Welfare) Umakanta Tripathy.
The winners and outstanding performers in the marathon were felicitated by Prof. Sukumar Mishra and Sakuntala Mishra.
The event was coordinated by Sports Officers Dr Anita Kumari and Mr Abhishek Vaishya, along with the Sports and Physical Education Department of IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
Hockey match to mark Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy
The National Sports Day celebrations will continue in the evening with a hockey match, paying tribute to Major Dhyan Chand and reinforcing the spirit of sportsmanship among students, employees and other members of the IIT (ISM) community.
The enthusiastic participation of the institute community made the celebrations a vibrant occasion, while underlining the role of fitness, teamwork, discipline, perseverance and sportsmanship in everyday life.
