Dhanbad, July 24: IIT (ISM) Dhanbad Director Prof. Sukumar Mishra encouraged newly admitted postgraduate students to look beyond the syllabus and focus on innovation during the Induction-cum-Orientation Programme.

Addressing the students, he stressed the importance of leveraging the institute’s extensive laboratory and academic resources and emphasized the value of on-campus learning.
“Unlike B.Tech students, you need to move beyond the syllabus to innovate and explore,” Prof. Mishra said, urging students to embrace creativity and research.

He also advised students to maintain discipline, interact freely with faculty for academic and personal guidance, and adhere to campus regulations.

Academic Structure and Student Welfare Explained
Prof. M.K. Singh, Dean (Academic), outlined the institute’s academic framework, explaining the 14-week semester system, along with mid-semester and end-semester examinations, and detailed evaluation methods.
Prof. S.K. Gupta, Dean (Students’ Welfare), gave students an overview of hostel amenities, the Student Centre, and sports facilities. He highlighted that the Student Centre hosts 23 active student clubs to promote co-curricular involvement.
Research and Innovation Ecosystem at IIT ISM
Prof. Sagar Pal, Dean (Research), emphasized the institute’s advanced research infrastructure, describing it as among the best in the country. He encouraged students to participate actively in research and collaborative projects.
Prof. Alok Das, Dean (Innovation, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship), elaborated on IIT ISM’s innovation ecosystem. He shed light on facilities like the Innovation Hub, Naresh Vashisht Centre for Tinkering and Innovation, Mining Technology Innovation Hub (TEXMiN), CIL Innovation Centre, and Atal Community Innovation Centre (ACIC), which provide ample opportunities for startups and entrepreneurial ventures.

Library Resources and Digital Facilities
Prof. Ajay Mandal, Professor-in-Charge of the Central Library, presented an overview of the library services. He highlighted the state-of-the-art digital library resources available 24/7, ensuring uninterrupted academic support for students.
