SUBHASH MISHRA

Dhanbad, Dec 7: Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) Additional Director RP Gurang has said that the rules, regulations and guidelines have limitations beyond a point and it’s the consciousness of the common people which can help to tackle the issues of pollution.

Gurang, who was addressing a three-day national seminar on ‘Technology Advancement in Waste Management’ at Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre of IIT ISM Dhanbad, said that the biggest challenge lies with the framing of rules, guidelines to control pollution which are uniformly applicable across the nation.
“We must think that the excesses being carried out by us are ultimately impacting our health,” said Gurung while inaugurating the seminar.

Environment Science and Engineering department

The seminar was organized by the Environment Science and Engineering department of IIT ISM Dhanbad in which experts across the country put up their points.

On the occasion, IIT (ISM) Director Prof JK Pattanayak expressed concern over the issue of municipal waste and added the problem is not confined to any particular place but is affecting every place whether it is at IIT (ISM) where he joined 29 years ago or at his hometown, Bhubaneshwar.

He also shed light on some of the approaches being in use in developed countries regarding waste management systems where continuous monitoring of the waste disposal is carried out and use of waste recycling robots for waste recycling, the pneumatic waste system is transported through underground pipe systems and recycling apps.

Increase in waste amount

Prof Anshumali, HoD, Environmental Science and Engineering said population increase is primarily responsible for the increase in waste amount but we should take examples from the past and also adopt the traditional method of waste management.
Prof Vipin Kumar, while welcoming the dignitaries and participants said that the challenge lies before us to develop different types of technologies to address different waste management issues.

Prof Manish Kumar, the convener of the seminar proposed a vote of thanks.
