Dhanbad, Feb 14: Satish Jha, Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), emphasized the critical role of time management, effective communication, comprehensive project planning, and quality control in ensuring the successful execution of projects.
Addressing the Centennial Distinguished Lecture Series organized by the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering (DMS&IE) at IIT Indian School of Mines (ISM) Dhanbad, Jha underscored the importance of these factors in achieving efficiency and overcoming project challenges.
Insights on Project Management
Delivering a lecture titled “Industrial Insights in Project Management,” Jha provided an in-depth perspective on underground and opencast mining operations. His session covered essential aspects of project scope definition, gradually expanding to key execution and management strategies.

Drawing from his three decades of experience in the coal industry, Jha shared real-life instances where strategic project management, effective communication, and strong time management played crucial roles in overcoming operational crises.

The session began with a welcome address by Prof. Sandeep Mondal, Head of the Department of Management. Several senior faculty members, including Prof. J.K. Pattanayak, Prof. Niladri Das, and Prof. Rashmi Singh, were also in attendance.
Satish Jha’s Leadership in Mining
Jha, an esteemed mining professional, holds a B.E. in Mining from Nagpur University, an M.Tech in Industrial Engineering & Management from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Mine Planning at IIT BHU.
His contributions to the mining sector span organizations like CMPDIL, CCL, ECL, and SECL, where he has been instrumental in driving sustainability and digital transformation.
Under his leadership, significant initiatives have been introduced, including the implementation of 5G technology in mining, coal R&D hackathons, major forest clearances, digital mining solutions, and the adoption of Longwall mining at SECL.
His strategic approach continues to shape advancements in the industry, reinforcing the importance of innovation and efficiency in modern mining operations.
