Dhanbad, March 6: The Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, has launched a capacity-building training programme on information technology and computer skills for tribal students in Jharkhand under the Centre of Excellence initiative supported by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India.
The three-day programme (March 5–7, 2026) is being conducted for students of Classes X, XI and XII studying in Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS).
Training underway in three Jharkhand districts
As part of the programme, mid-semester examinations and hands-on practical training sessions are currently being conducted at three EMRS institutions:

- EMRS Kathijoria, Dumka
- EMRS Tasaria, Godda
- EMRS Bhognadih, Sahibganj
The initiative aims to enhance digital literacy and technical competencies among tribal youth, helping improve their future employability and access to technology-driven opportunities.

Focus on Python programming and Advanced Tally
Students enrolled in the basic training module are learning the fundamentals of Python programming, enabling them to develop coding skills and computational thinking.
Meanwhile, the advanced training sessions focus on Advanced Tally, providing students with practical exposure to accounting and financial management software widely used in professional environments.
The programme includes demonstrations, guided practical sessions and interactive discussions, designed to strengthen conceptual understanding and encourage active learning among students.
IIT (ISM) faculty guiding the programme
The initiative is being conducted under the guidance of Prof. Rashmi Singh and Prof. Niladri Das from the Department of Management Studies and Industrial Engineering at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
Training and evaluation activities at the schools are being carried out by a visiting team comprising Nilesh Kumar and Firdaus Ansari.

Rajni Singh, Dean (Corporate Communications), IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, said the initiative reflects the institute’s continued commitment to strengthening digital access and skill development among tribal communities.
“Through this programme, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad is working to equip tribal students with essential digital and technological skills that will support their academic growth and future careers. The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs’ vision of empowering tribal youth through education, digital literacy and technology-driven skill development,” she said.
