Jamshedpur, June 19: In a brazen case of daytime fraud, two conmen allegedly duped a 53-year-old woman of gold jewellery worth nearly Rs 7 lakh by exploiting her fears about her children’s safety in Telco Colony on Friday morning.

The victim, Sangeeta Mahanta, wife of international athlete and Tata Motors employee Lal Mohan Mahanta, has lodged a complaint with Telco police following the incident.

Fraudsters Gain Woman’s Confidence

According to the complaint, Sangeeta had stepped out around 9.30 am to buy vegetables when an unidentified man approached her near her residence in M-46 Block, Telco Colony, asking about a yoga instructor named Anita.

When she said she did not know anyone by that name, another man joined the conversation. The duo gradually gained her confidence, with one of them claiming to be a lawyer living in a nearby building.

Fear of Calamity Used as Trap

The accused allegedly told Sangeeta that her children were facing a grave danger and that an immediate ritual was necessary to avert a possible calamity.

Under the pretext of performing the ritual, they persuaded her to remove all the gold jewellery she was wearing and place it in a bag.

The fraudsters then instructed her to fetch four karanj leaves and walk 11 steps ahead as part of the purported remedy.

As soon as she complied, the two men allegedly fled with the bag containing the jewellery.

They also reportedly took away her mobile phone, cash, and house keys before escaping from the spot.

Police Scan CCTV Footage

Following the complaint, Telco police reached the area and launched an investigation.

Officials are examining CCTV footage from nearby locations to identify the suspects, who were reportedly dressed in white shirts and black trousers.

Police are also questioning residents and pursuing leads to trace and apprehend the accused.

The incident has raised concerns over the growing number of confidence tricks and frauds targeting residents by exploiting superstition, fear, and emotional vulnerability.

Police have urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid sharing personal information or valuables with strangers claiming to offer spiritual remedies or solutions to personal problems.
