PINAKI MAJUMDAR

Jamshedpur, Feb 12: In a brazen daylight attack that has shocked Jamshedpur, fruit trader Kanhaiya Yadav succumbed to gunshot injuries at Tata Main Hospital (TMH) late Wednesday evening.

He was shot near Namda Basti under the Golmuri police station area on Wednesday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, two unidentified assailants arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at Yadav. The attackers reportedly fired around five rounds before fleeing the scene.

The sudden gunfire triggered panic in the locality, with residents running for safety.

The incident occurred barely 50 metres from the Golmuri police station, raising serious concerns over security and law enforcement in the area.

Succumbs During Treatment at TMH

Yadav was rushed to Tata Main Hospital in critical condition and placed under intensive medical care. Despite sustained efforts by doctors, he died during treatment later in the evening.

Old Rivalry Suspected

Preliminary investigations suggest that the attack may be linked to a long-standing rivalry dating back to 2016 over the presidency of the Tinplate Kali Mandir Committee.

While Billa had earlier held the post of president, Yadav later assumed charge. Police suspect that tensions stemming from the leadership dispute may have led to the fatal shooting.

The names of Billa and Vicky Singh alias Kundi have surfaced during the probe. However, officials have not yet confirmed their involvement. Raids are underway to trace the accused.

CCTV Footage Under Scan, BJP Protests

Police cordoned off the area soon after the incident and began collecting evidence. CCTV footage from nearby locations is being examined as part of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the BJP strongly condemned the daylight murder. Agitated party workers gheraoed the Golmuri police station on Wednesday night in protest against the killing.

Police authorities have assured that those responsible will be arrested soon.

Law and Order Concerns Amid Poll Code

The killing, carried out in broad daylight and close to a police station, has intensified questions over law and order in Jamshedpur, especially at a time when the Model Code of Conduct is in force for civic body elections.

Over the past year, the city has witnessed a rise in criminal activities, including encounters, kidnappings and daylight shootings. The circulation of narcotics and the recent busting of an illegal arms manufacturing unit have further heightened public concern.

The Golmuri shooting has once again underscored fears that criminals are operating with alarming audacity, even in areas considered high-security zones.
